How to Adopt a Wild Horse from Montgomery Creek Ranch: A Guide to Giving a Mustang a Forever Home

Mustang in training, Chase.

Adopting a wild horse is a unique and rewarding experience that not only changes the life of the horse but also enriches the life of the adopter. At Montgomery Creek Ranch (MCR), we take great pride in our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome wild horses (and burros!), ensuring they find their forever homes. This blog post will guide you through the process of adopting a wild horse from MCR and shed light on the dedication and resources invested in each horse that becomes part of our adoption program.

The Journey of an MCR Mustang

Before a horse reaches the point of adoption, MCR invests significantly in their well-being and training. Our commitment to the horses starts from the moment we rescue them, many of whom are saved from slaughter or adopted from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Here's a breakdown of what we invest in every MCR-trained horse:

  • Initial Adoption Fee: This can be as low as $25 for BLM sale authority or $125 for a BLM adoption fee. Horses from auctions or kill pens average between $600 to $800.

  • Cost of Shipping: Depending on the origin, shipping a horse to MCR can cost up to $1,500.

  • Boarding and Training: It costs us approximately $500 per month to board and train each horse at our facility.

  • Healthcare: Annual trimming, worming, and vaccinations amount to $300, with vet costs varying widely depending on the horse's needs.

On average, MCR spends about $6,675 for a horse to spend one year in our training program. This investment is a testament to our dedication to giving these horses their best chance at a safe and secure life. Most horses are in our training program for 1-3 years.

Adoption Fees

Our adoption fees start at $1,750 but ultimately depends on the horses and their skillset. This fee reflects the extensive care, training, and resources allocated to prepare each horse for adoption. By adopting from MCR, you're not just giving a horse a loving home; you're also enabling us to rescue and save another wild horse from slaughter or a sad life in BLM holding pens.

How to Adopt

Adopting a wild horse from MCR involves a few key steps designed to ensure the best possible match between horse and adopter:

1. Visit our Website: Start by visiting the MCR website to view available horses and learn more about their stories. Each horse has a unique personality and training level, which we carefully document to help you find the perfect match.

2. Submit an Application: Once you've found a horse you're interested in, submit an adoption application. This helps us understand your experience, environment, and what you're looking for in a horse.

3. Meet the Mustang: If your application is approved, we'll invite you to MCR to meet the horse in person. This is a crucial step in ensuring a good fit for both you and the horse.

4. Home Check: We may conduct a home check to ensure your property is suitable and safe for a wild horse.

5. Adoption Agreement: Once everything is in place, you'll sign an adoption agreement outlining the responsibilities of both parties.

6. Welcome Home: After the adoption is finalized, your new horse can come home with you. We provide ongoing support and advice to help you and your horse adjust.
