Montgomery Creek Ranch offers seasonal training spots to work with our mustangs and it’s time to say goodbye to one of the best, Hannah Murphy of Trinity Equine!
What was your impression of working with mustangs and how does it differ from working with domestics?
The mustangs tend have a much higher survival instinct than domestic horses. Pair this with an incredible sense of observation to the world around them and they can be really challenging horses to train! They take a lot longer to gain trust and you really have to earn it every step of the way. That being said, if you can get to that point where they consider you a member of their herd, they make incredible partners. It’s really important to remember they are horses and not people, we have to think like they do and create an environment where they are willing to “talk” to us through their body language.
Did you have a special bond with any of the horses?
Absolutely! Every horse has made an impact on me and I’ve learned so much about myself and training from each of them. One in particular has stood out from the herd for me from the beginning - Chase. He’s been my greatest challenge and he’d really prefer to stay wild but we have a lot in common. Horses are truly mirrors of ourselves and I have come to see so much of my own struggles and strengths in him. I’m not sure what is in store for his future but I’m so glad to have met this little horse and for all he has taught me in my short time here.
What has been your proudest training moment at MCR?
Getting a halter on Sid! It has taken me SO long and so many different methods to get to this point. I’ve had to explore new ideas and give them time to work, to see a step in the right direction was amazing. This new way of thinking about training is definitely something I will carry with me back home to Texas.
What did you like about working with MCR?
I love working with Nancy, the director of horsemanship. She’s a wealth of knowledge and the kindest friend to these horses! The way that MCR stewards these horses to be the best they can be, whatever that may look like, is rare and honorable. I look forward to every day with the team - both of the horse and human variety.
Where can supporters continue to follow your work?
My Facebook page, Trinity Equine, is the best place to see updates and keep in touch. I am always up for talking horses so feel free to reach out with any questions! My husband and I will be finishing our new property this summer so that I can continue training in North Texas.
