Our team at Montgomery Creek Ranch is thrilled to welcome our newest horse trainer, Angelica Bloomfield. Being the newbie, we sat down with Angelica to ask her a few questions!
What is your background with horses?
I grew up with horses from a young age. I was lucky to be in a family that bred quarter horses and was into trail riding and competing. From the age of 12, I held down a job working with trainers and exercising horses, and buying and training my own horses to learn as much as I could.
Have you had much experience with mustangs?
Mustangs are some of my favorite horses to work with. I competed at the Mustang Makeover in 2020 and it was the best experience of my life. Since then I have gentled and trained many mustangs and developed a love for them.
Is there anything that differentiates mustangs from other horses in your experience when it comes to training?
I do think there can be a difference between gentling mustangs and other captive-raised horses. I think this really varies on the horses’ personalities though. I’ve worked some very difficult horses who were pasture-raised and I’ve worked some very easy horses off the range and vice versa. I find that mustangs typically become very bonded with their handlers and can be extra affectionate and very reliable horses if trained properly.
What has been your favorite part of working at MCR so far? Any favorite horses?
I love my time working at MCR. The team is a joy to work with and the environment is very peaceful. I love having the freedom to bring the horses along in my own training style and to be trusted to do so. We all have the same mission— to see the potential in these mustangs and bring it out of them so they can go and be successful in the world. I’d have to say Chase is my favorite horse. He and I have formed a close bond. He’s the kind of horse I really like to work with-sensitive and attentive. He notices every detail. I think he has all the potential in the world.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I love riding my horses bridleless! Liberty riding is my passion and you can see me headed down the trail on my trusty mare with nothing but a neck rope. I live and breathe the horse life.
