Chewy (Formerly fossil) |Owner: Moire "Mo" Donald

I was first introduced to Montgomery Creek Ranch Wild Horse Rescue by my step daughter Lorie who had been following them on Facebook. We made and appointment and took a drive to visit their operation west of Maxwell near Elk Creek.

We were both very impressed by not only their facility but by the all the people who make it work so well. Basically they have over 200 rescue horses the majority of which live semi wild on their acreage getting what ever they need to remain healthy; these they deem un-adoptable.

What we really wanted to see however were the horses they had ready for adoption. At the time we fell for an elegant sorrel mare named Louise. She was personable, friendly, amazingly well trained and beautiful. We were sold! And so was she, to us.

I need to note that Nancy and Ky not only do an great job of first gentling and then training each horse but they learn the personality and quirks of each of their charges so they can best be matched with their new owner and forever home. Not like a “horse trader” they are very honest about their horses and how they will fit.

So with our great experience having and riding Louise we wanted to find a nice little horse for Lorie who is a newer rider. We went back and found our next adoptee, Fossil. Yes, Fossil, apparently when they obtained him he resembled a petroglyph. He was close to 5 years, a small bay horse with a friendly but more timid personality and again trained well enough that Lorie could manage him easily out on the trail. Ky pointed out that he wasn’t the happiest in an arena but he trucks right along out on the trail. We did rename him, Chewy, because he loves to eat!"
