Meet Topsy
Bay Roan filly, DOB: 2024
BIO
Topsy is a striking bay roan filly born on March 26, 2024, at Montgomery Creek Ranch. From the start, she has been a standout—bold, curious, and full of personality. Raised at the ranch, Topsy quickly developed a love for scratches and made it clear that she had plenty of opinions about training. Though naturally tame, she wasn’t halter trained initially and was recently weaned in October 2024, taking her first steps toward a bright future.
By January 2025, Topsy had made significant progress and began wearing a halter—an achievement made possible through patient groundwork that helped her understand what was being asked of her without feeling overwhelmed by pressure. This thoughtful approach has made her increasingly manageable while still allowing her spirited nature to shine through.
In March 2025, Topsy reached another milestone as she began leading well in an enclosed space and started becoming more accustomed to having her legs and feet handled. Though she remains defensive and prone to nipping when feeling uncertain, she continues to grow more confident and responsive with each training session.
TOPSY’S STORY
Topsy’s mother was rounded up by helicopter from the Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory, a rugged and expansive area known for its wild horse herds, to make way for private livestock grazing in the forest. Her mother was heavily pregnant, though this wasn’t apparent until she walked off the trailer at MCR.To learn more about how you can help keep wild horses wild, visit the American Wild Horse Conservation.
