Meet SID
BUCKSKIN GELDING, DOB: 2022
BIO
Sid is a spirited 14-hand buckskin colt born in early 2022 in the rugged Cedar Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) in Utah.
In the summer of 2023, Sid began his training at Montgomery Creek Ranch. His sensitive and reactive nature has been both a challenge and a testament to the incredible patience and dedication of his trainers. Though progress has been steady rather than swift, each milestone has been earned through trust and understanding.
Initially, Sid’s playful, silly, and curious personality made him eager to interact with his handlers, but his sensitivity required careful and thoughtful training. Over the past few months, he has made significant strides, though he is still working on his halter training. Since January 2025, he has become more comfortable leading out of smaller pens into larger contained areas—a big step in building his confidence and responsiveness. When he gets distracted, he continues to show a good tendency to come back to his trainer, Sydney, once she regains his focus.
By February, Sid had taken his next big step—leading out and having new adventures, as captured in a recent Instagram video. He’s also practicing holding his feet up comfortably, another key part of his journey toward becoming a well-rounded, trusting companion.
sid’S STORY
Sid spent his early months running with a small band of wild mustangs before being captured during a BLM helicopter roundup in September 2022. Sadly, his mother did not survive the journey, and Sid sustained a severe head injury, resulting in nerve damage and a permanent disfigurement of his mouth. Despite this setback, Sid remained resilient and healthy. In May 2023, Sid was made available through the BLM’s Adoption Incentive Program (AIP), but he was left behind, unwanted. Thankfully, a photographer named Tandin who had documented Sid in the wild, alerted us to him. To learn more about how you can help keep wild horses wild, visit the American Wild Horse Conservation.
